Els Enfarinats – the Spanish Flour Fight!

We’ve covered many fights on this website so far; the Grape Fight, the Orange Fight, the Tomato Fight, the Wine Fight and yes, even the Gravy Fight… and while we don’t want to flog a dead horse, there is another fight to add to that list – the Flour and Egg Fight!

Day of the Innocents

Each year on December 28th, locals of the small town of Ibi in Alicante, Spain, get up to a little bit of mischief.  Els Enfarinats is celebrated as part of the Day of the Innocents, a day that is somewhat similar to April Fools’ Day though it has more biblical roots.  The Day of the Innocents observes the day when King Herod ordered the slaughter of boys under the age of two in Bethlehem in an attempt to kill the baby Jesus – but Jesus had already been moved to Egypt.  Joke’s on you, King Herod!

Day of the Innocents, like April Fools’, evokes pranks – but instead of calling out APRIL FOOLS, people call out “Inocente, inocente!” or “Innocent one!”

We’re not entirely sure how this is woven into Els Enfarinats, but the tradition has been going strong for around 200 years. Participants of Els Enfarinats dress in faux military garb and stage a mock coup, pretending to take control of the town.  They saunter into businesses and cheekily impose fines, read humorous speeches and mock dignitaries.  Those who “oppose” them are greeted with an onslaught of flour and eggs.

When:  December 28th, 2012

Where:  Ibi, Alicante, Spain

Have you been to Els Enfarinats?  If so, let us know what it was like.  We’d love to hear from you.

  1. What a blast! We need customs like this in the U.S. Give people a chance to blow off some steam while having laughs. Maybe we could start with yearly mock end of the world speeches and gag gifts followed by a “last” feast with family and friends. The “Festival of Destruction!”
