Grapes of Wrath? The Grape Fight of Binissalem

Spain is really starting to take the lead in terms of delightfully bizarre celebrations.  With that, it is our pleasure to introduce you to the upcoming Grape Fight of Binissalem.

The little town of Binissalem is renowned for producing some of the tastiest wines in Majorca.  Each September after the grape harvest the town gathers to celebrate the Fiesta of La Vermada.  While the fiesta does ring in with the usual fun of live music and wine tasting, the main attraction for tourists and locals is the grape fight.

Over a thousand people gather in the centre of the town and wait for the traditional rocket to be fired. Once fired, all are led out into a field and circle around a giant pile of grapes.  When the whistle blows carnage ensues as it becomes every man, woman and child for themselves!

Where: Binissalem, Majorca, Spain

When:  Saturday, September 22nd, 2012
